When Is It Too Cold to Walk Your Dog?
As temperatures drop, many dog owners start asking the same question: is it still safe to head out for a walk? Here’s a handy infographic:
The answer isn’t as simple as checking the thermometer. Cold weather safety depends on a combination of temperature, conditions and, most importantly, your individual dog.
For many healthy dogs, anything above 5°C is generally comfortable. Between 0–5°C, more caution is needed, especially for smaller, short-haired, elderly or medically vulnerable dogs. Below freezing, walks may need to be shortened significantly, and in some cases replaced with indoor enrichment instead.
But temperature alone doesn’t tell the full story
Wind chill can make a mild day feel bitter. Rain and damp fur increase heat loss dramatically. Icy pavements bring slip risks, while grit and road salt can irritate sensitive paw pads. A sturdy, well-fitted coat can help some dogs, but it isn’t a universal solution.
Breed, age and health all matter. Thick-coated northern breeds are built for colder climates, while Greyhounds and other fine-coated dogs lose body heat quickly. Puppies struggle to regulate temperature, and older dogs with arthritis often feel the cold more acutely.
In many cases, 20–30 minutes is more than enough on colder days. Watch your dog’s behaviour closely. Shivering, lifting paws or slowing down are signs it’s time to head home.
January may be officially “Walk Your Dog Month”, but safe, sensible exercise is important all year round.
