Why does cat obesity matter?

Obesity is a major health concern. What many pet owners don’t understand is what is going on inside your overweight pet’s body that will affect its day-to-day life and make its future considerably shorter. 49% of veterinary professionals say they’ve seen an increase in pet obesity in the last two years*. Obesity in cats can lead to various health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and respiratory problems.

Body Condition Score

• There is a line between overweight and obesity, it looks very much like a  ‘BMI’ rating that we are used to seeing and hearing about. However, with pets,  it isn’t just about how much they weigh,  it is also about body condition scoring.
• Obesity can occur when a pet is 20%  over their ideal body weight. The body condition scoring shows how their body should look in terms of shape.

How to help your cat

To prevent or help your obese cat, it’s essential to provide a balanced diet, control portion sizes, encourage regular exercise, and consult your vet for guidance.
Many vet groups have workshops or support groups. You are not alone, but starting can significantly improve their quality of life.
