Flea Facts

Only 1 in 100 fleas are seen by owners. If untreated, they can cause skin irritations, discomfort, tapeworm infection, and in extreme cases, can make your pet anaemic.

Flea Lifecycle

Fleas have four stages; Eggs, larvae, pupae, adult. The adults lay in 24-48 hours, eggs hatch 1-6 days, larvae live 5-11 days and pupae can hatch in 7-14 days or be dormant for months.

Treat Your Pet

You can purchase a flea product from your vet. It can take up to six weeks for it to take effect, so it must be an ongoing treatment. Don’t use flea treatments for dogs on cats as this can be fatal. Make sure you use a treatment specially designed for cats, dogs or rabbits.

Treat Your Home

Did you know that the fleas on your pet represent only about 5% of the flea population? The other 95% sadly live in the environment that your pet spends its time in. Hoovering your home can remove up to 30% of flea larvae and up to 60% of flea eggs from carpets and bedding. Vacuuming chairs, beds, furniture, cushions and hardwood floors regularly.
Washing bedding and anything your pet sleeps on.

Make It A Routine

Fleas can survive some months without a host, so cleaning and flea treatment need to be ongoing, especially if your home is central-heated. If you spot fleas treat quickly. Prevention is key, as it is easier to prevent an infestation than treat one, so use a flea treatment regularly, in addition to cleaning and combing.
