Why should I have my pet microchipped?

As June is National Microchipping Month, we thought it would be a great opportunity to remind pet owners about the importance of having your pet microchipped.

Microchipping is mandatory for dogs in the UK, but there are still a huge number of pets which are not currently chipped, and RSPCA statistics have shown that 87% of cats taken into care in 2017 were not microchipped.

There are many reasons that a pet can go missing, and even the most obedient of dogs or homely of cats could find themselves lost and confused. Whatever the reason for their disappearance, there is a much higher chance of them being returned home if they have been microchipped.

Once a microchip is inserted, it will stay there for the duration of your pet’s life. So there is no need for multiple visits to the vets, you will just need to keep your pets details up to date should you move home.

What if my details are out of date?

As we have written about before on this blog, your details are not stored on the microchip itself, but are in fact stored on a database.

If you are not sure if your details are currently correct you can either visit www.check-a-chip.co.uk or phone 02037 738 398 to find out which database your pet falls under and who to contact to check your details.

In order to update your details, you will need to know the ID contained on the chip. You should be able to find this on the paperwork you received when you had your pet chipped or on your veterinary records If you have a passport for your pet, then you should also be able to find the ID here.

If you are not sure of your pet’s microchip ID then you may need to have them scanned to retrieve the information directly from the chip. I carry a scanner so am always happy to do this for you.
