Top five tips to keeping your cat healthy

February is National Cat Health Month as all of you all know I specialise in feline behaviour, in addition to having three furry felines of my own! In addition to being rescue cats, my cats all have varying issues, from arthritis to digestion problems. However, each has been on a journey and have shown me courage. So it’s important that, as responsible cat owners, we look after them, after all, that’s how we would like to be treated. So here are my top five tips to helping your cat stay fit and happy. As always, if you are unsure about your cat’s health make sure you start with a vet check.

Tip 1: Provide good food and plenty of water sources

Cats need a good diet, ideally, tailor it to their needs. One with a good level of protein is key as cats Cat drinking from ceramic bowl | Cat healthare used to eating meat, having predator instincts they would usually eat prey. However, an older cat may need a diet to help with urinary or digestive problems. Always measure out their food using the information on the packet or tin relating to their weight and age. Also always provide additional water sources. Ideally, a few ceramic or glass bowls are topped up daily with fresh water and positioned away from their food. Just as important is the *way* cats eat. They need stimulation, so think about introducing a puzzle feeder. Simply Think Outside the Bowl.

Tip 2: Cats are hunters, so make sure to play with them

Think toys on a pole, catnip mice in a paper bag, empty boxes and toilet roll tubes. Cats need stimulation to help those basic feline needs. Giving them some fun will help enrich their lives, improve their mental wellbeing and give you some enjoyment too.

Tip 3: Stop the itch; think Flea

You might think fleas are just an issue in winter when the heating comes on and cats spend more time indoors, but you would be wrong. The life cycle of a flea means its eggs can lie dormant for months, so a flea infestation can happen at any time. Treat your home, washing bedding, treat your cat with a flea product and repeat on a monthly basis. (Read my top five tips against Fleas) You can combine brushing your cat with a flea check, they will enjoy the attention and you can see if there are any signs of fleas.

Tip 4: Litter trays at the ready

I recently put together a helpful infographic about cat litter. Think about what type of litter you use, Fresh cat litter for happy catsfragranced cleaners, and where you place them. Clean them once a week, scooping daily if needed and position litter trays somewhere quiet.

Tip 5: Preventative Care

If your cat has a problem getting them seen by a vet in the early stages can save not only money but also suffering for your cat. Get them checked regularly, along with vaccinations, spaying, flea and worm treatments. I can help with cat behavioural issues, helping to administer prescribed medication, lion cuts and claw clipping.
